The Role of Tonle Sap Lake in Providing Water to the Mekong Delta During the Dry Season
Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, playing a vital role in regulating the Mekong River's flow.
Operating mechanism:
- During flood season (June-October): Mekong River water flows back into Tonle Sap Lake, expanding its area from 2,500 km² to 15,000 km²
- During dry season (November-May): Water flows from the lake into the Mekong River, supplementing flow to the Mekong Delta
Research results:
The study provided a detailed assessment of the lake's regulatory role amid hydropower development on the Mekong mainstream and climate change. Upstream dams have altered natural flow patterns, affecting the lake's water storage and release capacity.
Based on findings, adaptation solutions for the Mekong Delta were proposed, including water use planning, agricultural restructuring, and rainwater storage system development.
