Impact of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise on Groundwater on Phu Quy Island

Phu Quy Island District (Binh Thuan province) is an offshore island where freshwater mainly depends on groundwater.

Challenges: Climate change and sea level rise are creating significant challenges to water security, particularly saltwater intrusion into groundwater aquifers.

Research methods:

  • Assessment of climate change scenarios RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 impacts

Results: The study found that a 50cm sea level rise could reduce the island's exploitable groundwater reserves by 15-20%. These findings provide a crucial scientific basis for sustainable groundwater planning and management on the island.
